The Important Difference Between Weird and Chaos Midjourney Parameters

There are many types of parameters you can use with midjourney ai. But the weird and chaos parameters tend to generate the most interesting images. Even though the two features have similar functions, they have distinct uses.

The weird parameter is mainly used to create unexpected and unique images. On the other hand, the chaos parameter helps you get more diverse images when you add it to your prompt.
In this article, you will learn about how to properly use the midjourney weird and chaos parameters to significantly improve your ai art.

What is the midjourney weird parameter?

This is a very interesting parameter that can add unique and quirky qualities to your generated images. The default value for the weird parameter is 0; but you can manually increase it up to 3000. To use this feature, you should add ‐‐w or ‐‐weird followed by a number within the 0 – 3000 at the end of your prompt.

The whole point of this parameter is to create unique and unexpected ai art. Another thing about the weird parameter is that, depending on the value number, the generated image may not be connected to your prompt. This means that the higher the number you use, the less likely the midjourney bot will follow your text prompt.

In my opinion, the weird parameter in Midjourney is the most fun to use. You should use it when you want to create truly unique art that differs from the normal glossy ai art look.

But you should keep in mind that the Midjourney team has mentioned numerous times that this is an experimental parameter and that the effects it has on generated images may change over time.

I love experimenting with this feature and I always get excited to see what the AI model will generate. Let’s check out a few prompt examples using the weird parameter.

/imagine cinematic shot, friendly aesthetics, people meeting each other in a party, dark, spooky --weird 100

This is definitely a weird shot and I didn’t even set a high value to get it.

/imagine photorealistic image of a young female model wearing a luxurious dress and leaning on the wall of an old abandoned building in Berlin, colorful, vibrant --weird 500

As you can see from the example, you never know what you’re going to get when you use the weird parameter. Sometimes, the result will really stand out like this great shot.

I’ll do one more prompt example, but this time I’ll use a higher weird parameter value.

/imagine search for the missing piece of the puzzle, the key to unlocking the mysteries of the world, the answer to the most important questions --weird 750

To be honest I have no idea what’s going on in this image. But that’s what you get when you use high value numbers with the weird parameter in Midjourney. The point is for the bot to create some unpredictable and strange results.

What is the midjourney chaos parameter?

When you are prompting in midjourney, the chaos parameter gives you control over how different the initial image grids will be. The default value is 0; but you have the option to set a value between 0 and 100.

To use the chaos parameter, you should add ‐‐chaos or ‐‐c followed by a number between 0 – 100 at the end of your prompt. It’s recommended that you be conservative with the value you set. I usually go for a number in the 10-25 range, as I think that gives the best results.

The purpose of the chaos parameter in Midjourney is to introduce more variety in the initial image grids. So, if you don’t want your generated images to look similar to one another, you should use this parameter.

To check out how this parameter works, I’ll include full image grids instead of a single image for the following prompts:

/imagine album artwork featuring a colorful display of lights in the middle of the desert, mysterious, vibrant, pop culture --c 10

These would make great album covers. I feel like the first and the fourth images especially stand out, but that’s just my opinion. As you can see, there is a lot of variety in these images even though the chaos parameter value is set to only 10.

/imagine cinematic shot, close-up shot of an arctic fox, nature documentary style, photorealistic, ultra realistic, full HD --c 25

Arctic foxes are some of the cutest animals I’ve ever seen. All four images look great. And because of the chaos parameter I included in my prompt, each image had a different angle of the artic foxes. Even the lighting and expression of the foxes are different.

So, if you are looking for inspirations for your prompt in Midjourney you can try higher chaos values to get more diverse images.

What is the difference between weird and chaos parameters?

The weird parameter is used to create unique and unpredicted images while the chaos parameter helps you get more variation with your generated image grid.

Another thing about the weird parameter is that, depending on the value number, the generated image may not be connected to your prompt. This means that the higher the number you use, the less likely the midjourney bot will follow your text prompt. On the other hand, adding the chaos parameter to your midjourney prompt does not affect how the bot interprets your prompt. It just creates more variations to suit your text prompt.

Does the midjourney chaos and weird parameter work well together?

Let’s see what these two parameters would generate when used together in a prompt:

/imagine cinematic shot, close-up shot of an arctic fox, nature documentary style, photorealistic, ultra realistic, full HD --weird 500 --chaos 100

This pairing looks laughable and dramatic. The animals do not look like artic foxes. The midjourney bot seems to take inspiration from the prompt rather than follow my text prompt.

The verdict

I believe you have seen the differences between the chaos parameter and the weird parameter in midjourney. You should also be aware of how and when to use these two very useful parameters to make the images you want to see.

While you can combine both parameters to create unique images, I would not advise you do so unless you are trying to create ugly art styles. Remember that you can always tweak your number range to increase or decrease the influence these parameters have on your prompts and how it affects the generated images.
